AD-HOC

AD-HOC

Treasured delegates, welcome to HNMUN 2022’s renewed and revamped ad-hoc committee. An ad-hoc committee is a committee where the topic is not revealed until a few days before conference, making the ad-hoc committee one of the most competitive and challenging formats for a Model UN committee. Nowhere will you find a more worthwhile place to test your skills and abilities. This year’s offering will be no different. Prepare to be challenged. This committee will truly be unlike anything you've ever seen.

Dear Delegates,

My name is Angel A. Mata and I am absolutely jazzed to be directing our brand-new "Ad-Hoc" committee as HNMUN 2022. An "Ad-Hoc" committee is a crisis committee where the topic and materials are made available to delegates less than a few days before conference, with fun and puzzling hints released slowly throughout the year. If that sounds scary, that's because it is, but it also happens to be the most fun and challenging committee format possible.

A little about me: I was born in Venezuela and was raised in Central Florida (The Happiest Place on Earth™), where I grew up obsessing over music and video games. I am a rising senior studying History of Science and Computer Science. My specialty lies in the history of computer graphics and artificial intelligence. Academically, I've researching reviving lost or forgotten computer programs of historical interest and am looking towards exploring the role of the video game industry in early computer graphics and artificial intelligence development. In my own time, I build (crappy) amateur graphics software. I've spent a lot of time in theatre and acting (perfect training for MUN!) and am an award-winning science fiction writer. Recently, I've been dabbling in building video games and music (check me out on Spotify!).

I served as a Head Delegate for Harvard's own travelling MUN team in 2020 which I considered the pinnacle for my MUN career at Harvard. My experience with MUN, however, began when I served as an Assistant Director for Specialized Agencies at HNMUN 2019. I fell in love with it. MUN allows us to deeply engage with historical and international issues in a collaborative way, requiring a thorough examination with nuance and precision. The best of all was that it was fun. My love for crisis-style committees led me to running my own committee at HNMUN 2020: The Republic of Gran Colombia, 1819. I intend to take what I've learned over the last three and a half years as both a director and a delegate to ensure that delegates in our committee will have the most seamless, substantive, and fun experience they have ever had at any Model UN committee ever. Rest assured that I consider this committee to be the culmination of all my years of MUN — my magnus opus.

Your Crisis Director — Pablo Martinez — and I are looking forward to meeting and working with each and every one of you to make this committee the most talked-about MUN committee ever. We've been working hard to ensure you have a fulfilling and enjoyable time with us at HNMUN 2022.

Best wishes,

Angel A. Mata

Crisis Director's Letter

Dear Delegates,

It is my distinct honor and pleasure to welcome you all to HNMUN 2022.

I am extremely excited to be serving as your Crisis Director and you can all expect to have a fast-paced, hectic, but ultimately fun weekend with an engaging and strongly delegate-driven crisis. This committee is unique not only because it is the first Ad Hoc committee at HNMUN in nearly a decade but also because of the uniqueness of the committee’s setting and the roles you will play within it. This novel setting will challenge the core of your Model United Nations skills and I personally look forward to reading through your ingenious and creative crisis arcs.

To tell you all a bit about myself, I am an off-cycle senior (meaning I graduate during next year’s fall semester) studying Philosophy. I was born and raised in San Dimas, California which is only a short, but traffic-filled, drive away from Los Angeles proper. My academic interests are quite broad and I enjoy learning about almost anything, however some topics that are especially captivating to me include: the history of science, artificial intelligence and its social implications, creative writing, and physics. When it comes to having fun I usually turn to my favorite strategy video games such as Stellaris and Hearts of Iron 4.

I have been involved in Model UN since my sophomore year in highschool when I began competing at conferences in the Los Angeles area and now I continue to compete and travel on Harvard’s Model UN travel team (ICMUN) in addition to staffing Harvard’s highschool (HMUN Boston) and collegiate conferences (HNMUN). I have always enjoyed debating in general and Model UN has only encouraged and developed this interest further. Additionally, I have been both a Director and Crisis Director in the past and I absolutely love running crisis committees. From my perspective running a crisis committee is like weaving a tapestry out of the individual threads supplied by your crisis arcs, it is both challenging but incredibly fun for me and my crisis team to piece together your complex plans and have them augment the substance of the committee.

I am extremely excited to meet you all and do my best to provide you with an outstanding and engaging experience.

Sincerely,

Pablo Martinez
