WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

topic summary

In the expanding world of technology, the presence of artificial intelligence has become more and more prominent in modern society. Despite its growing influences and its increasingly accurate predictions, artificial intelligence is still often distrusted in many societies across the globe. Some view artificial intelligence with caution because it is a more novel technology. Others are wary of artificial intelligence because of the biases that it can sometimes present.

This committee aims to address the increasing concerns surrounding the ethical and equitable use of artificial intelligence among all communities throughout the world. How can we ensure that the underrepresented populations can share the benefits of artificial intelligence while also making sure that private corporations don’t take advantage of these underrepresented populations like they have in the past? How can we also better incorporate artificial intelligence into the medical industry, where software can better help doctors?

Director’s Letter

Dear Delegates,

My name is Nicholas Yang and I am proud to be serving as your Director for the World Health Organization for HNMUN 2024! I am currently a sophomore in Quincy House hoping to study Computational Neuroscience.

I previously served as an Assistant Director for Administration for HMUN and also as an Assistant Director for the GA (also the WHO!) for HNMUN, and this year, I am proud to be the Under Secretary-General of Administration for HMUN (as well as being the director for this committee!). I have always taken an interest in learning more about the computational tools that we are surrounded by on a daily basis, especially artificial intelligence, along with the ethical and moral concerns surrounding the usage and implementation of artificial intelligence.

Through this committee, I hope that everyone is able to learn more about addressing the growing concerns over artificial intelligence and is able to work with other delegates to address the current (and in some places, lacking) policies governing artificial intelligence while still learning the many skills that Model UN teaches to everyone! As with many other committees in Model UN, there is no one singular answer that will best solve this issue, so I encourage all delegates to work collaboratively and create new resolutions that addresses the issues put forth by this committee in a well-rounded and creative way.

One final fun fact about me before I conclude my introduction: I will always say good morning to you, no matter the time of the day, even during committee sessions. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or just to chat - I will try my best to respond promptly. I can’t wait to meet everyone in February!

Best regards,

Nicholas Yang
